Teacher To Tutor Freedom

I qualified as a primary teacher at the age of 21. I very quickly secured my first teaching job in a wonderful primary school, in a semi-rural, fairly affluent area. As a newly qualified teacher, I fell in love with my job very quickly. Fast forward 23 years later and I was still at the same school! I had worked my way through various roles - SENCO, Head of Key Stage 2, Curriculum Leader, Professional Learning Lead, Acting Deputy Headteacher. You name it - I had done it! For the most part, I loved every second. As we all know, the job is exhausting and can be hugely demanding. I don't have any horror stories, I was very lucky to work amongst brilliant colleagues and leaders. However, I felt I wanted more. At the age of 44 it felt like something was missing. So I resigned. In July 2023, I handed my notice in and decided I would tutor full time. I made it work! It has been hugely successful, profitable and rewarding. I don't have all the answers and there are many other courses out there who will have different approaches that worked for them. But I know that this worked for me and it can work for you. It won't be easy to start with and you will need to put the groundwork in. At the time of writing this I have been tutoring for 8 months. 3 months ago, I even began building tutoring agency (but that's a different story). I have a variety of face to face and online students. I tutor students during the daytime as well as evenings. I tutor 1:1, pairs and groups and I run classes in the local community hub. A huge variety! That is the mindset shift you will need - tutoring is not just teaching 1 child, after school for 1 hour. It is so much more!
